Destination Intelligence

The Punjab Travel Compass

Everything you need to know to plan your journey perfectly, from Golden Temple etiquette to rural experiences.

Seasonal Rhythms

Punjab's plains experience intense weather shifts. Here is what to expect:

  • Winter (Oct-Mar): The absolute best time to visit. Pleasant days and cold nights. Perfect for sightseeing.
  • Summer (Apr-Jun): Extremely hot and dry. Afternoon outdoor activities are difficult.
  • Spring/Baisakhi (Mid-April): A culturally vibrant time as the harvest festival is celebrated across the state.

Golden Temple Etiquette

The Harmandir Sahib is a highly revered spiritual site. Please observe the following:

  • Dress Code: Shoulders and knees must be covered. A head covering (scarf/rumal) is mandatory for everyone.
  • Footwear: Shoes and socks must be removed and deposited at the free counter outside before entering.
  • Cleanliness: You must wash your feet in the shallow water pool at the entrance.

Wagah Border Protocols

The Beating Retreat Ceremony is a major attraction with massive crowds:

  • Timings: Arrive at least 2 hours early to secure a seat, as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Security: Bags of any size are strictly prohibited. Carry only your wallet, phone, and water bottle.
  • Atmosphere: Expect a highly patriotic, loud, and energetic environment with loud music and cheering.

Rural Farm Stays

Your rural retreat is designed for an authentic agricultural immersion:

  • Pacing: Life on the farm is slow. This is the time to relax and disconnect.
  • Activities: Depending on the season, you may experience tractor rides, mustard fields, or dairy farming routines.

Chandigarh Layout

India’s first planned city operates differently from other Indian towns:

  • The Grid System: The city is cleanly divided into self-contained "Sectors." There is no Sector 13!
  • Traffic Rules: Chandigarh has extremely strict traffic laws, speed cameras, and no-honking zones.
  • Urban Leisure: Sector 17 is the pedestrian-only heart of the city, perfect for evening walks.

Culinary Expectations

Punjab is famous for its rich, hearty, and generous cuisine:

  • Amritsari Specialities: Do not miss the famous Amritsari Kulcha, large glasses of Lassi, and Makki di Roti with Sarson ka Saag.
  • Langar: The Golden Temple serves a free community meal (Langar) 24/7. It is a deeply humbling experience.
  • Dhaba Culture: Highway dhabas offer some of the most authentic and delicious meals on the road.
