Trip Overview
Experience the absolute pinnacle of European rail travel. Armed with your all-inclusive Swiss Travel Pass, this itinerary uses Switzerland's impeccably punctual train network as your primary mode of luxury transport. You will begin in the lakeside adventure hub of Interlaken, ascend to the "Top of Europe" at Jungfraujoch, travel deep into the car-free village of Zermatt to witness the mighty Matterhorn, and conclude in the historic, swan-filled waters of Lucerne.
Day 1 Arrival in Zurich & Transfer to Interlaken
Arrive at Zurich Airport (ZRH). Validate your Swiss Travel Pass right at the airport station and board a direct, highly scenic train to Interlaken (approx. 2 hours). Situated beautifully between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. Check into your hotel. Spend the afternoon taking a leisurely boat cruise on the emerald waters of Lake Thun, or stroll through the Höhe Matte park with views of the distant Jungfrau mountain.
Day 2 The Top of Europe (Jungfraujoch)
After an early breakfast, embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Take the modern Eiger Express tricable gondola, followed by the historic Jungfrau Railway cogwheel train, climbing steeply through the mountains to Jungfraujoch—Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 meters (11,332 ft). Stand on the Sphinx Observatory deck to view the massive Aletsch Glacier, walk through the enchanting Ice Palace, and step out onto the eternal snow. Descend back to Interlaken in the late afternoon.
Day 3 The Scenic Journey to Car-Free Zermatt
Check out and board the train for a breathtaking transition through the Alps. The journey to Zermatt takes you through the Lötschberg Base Tunnel and deep into the Mattertal valley. Zermatt is a fully car-free alpine village; only electric vehicles and horse-drawn carriages are permitted. Check into your chalet. Spend the evening exploring the charming Bahnhofstrasse, lined with luxury boutiques and cozy Swiss bakeries, with the looming silhouette of the Matterhorn in the background.
Day 4 The Gornergrat & The Mighty Matterhorn
After breakfast, board the Gornergrat Bahn, Europe’s highest open-air cog railway. The 33-minute ride takes you to an altitude of 3,089 meters. From the summit, you will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular panoramas in the world: a 360-degree view of 29 towering peaks, centered perfectly around the iconic, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn. Enjoy lunch on the sun terrace. If you enjoy hiking, take the scenic trail down to Riffelsee lake to capture the Matterhorn's reflection in the water before returning to Zermatt.
Day 5 The Glacier Express Route to Lucerne
Today features the experience of a lifetime. Board the world-famous Glacier Express (or travel the exact same stunning route on regional panoramic trains with your pass). Known as the "slowest express train in the world," the route crosses the magnificent Oberalp Pass and winds through the Rhine Gorge (the Swiss Grand Canyon). Disembark at Chur or Andermatt and connect to your train heading to Lucerne. Check into your hotel in this quintessential Swiss city.
Day 6 Mount Titlis & Historic Lucerne
Take a short train ride to Engelberg and board the Titlis Rotair, the world's first revolving cable car, to the summit of Mount Titlis (3,020m). Experience the thrilling Titlis Cliff Walk—Europe's highest suspension bridge—and the Glacier Cave. Return to Lucerne in the afternoon for a cultural walk. Cross the iconic 14th-century wooden Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), view the poignant Lion Monument, and enjoy a farewell dinner in the vibrant Old Town.
Day 7 Departure from Zurich
Enjoy your final Swiss breakfast. Lucerne is conveniently located just a 50-minute direct train ride from Zurich Airport (ZRH). Use your Swiss Travel Pass to transfer directly into the airport terminal at your leisure, checking in for your flight home and taking with you the memories of an immaculate Alpine expedition.
