Planned with a smooth travel flow, balanced acclimatization, and comfortable pacing, this expedition ensures a safe, immersive, and premium travel experience across the rugged Spiti Valley circuit.

Day 1 Arrival in Chandigarh & Ascent to Narkanda

Arrive at Chandigarh International Airport or Chandigarh Junction Railway Station, where professional assistance will greet you, marking the start of your Ultimate Spiti Valley Expedition covering Chandigarh, Narkanda, Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, Tabo, Kaza, Chandratal, and Manali. Begin your comprehensive circuit covering the diverse landscapes of Kinnaur and Spiti. The journey starts with a scenic drive toward Narkanda, transitioning through Himalayan highways, winding mountain bends, and the pine-clad hill regions near Shimla. This gradual altitude gain is strategically planned to allow for comfortable acclimatization before entering the higher Himalayan districts. Upon arrival, check into your mountain hotel and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, overlooking deep valleys and forest-covered hills.

Day 2 The Kinnaur Gateway: Narkanda to Sangla

After breakfast, proceed toward the magnificent Sangla Valley through the dramatic Sutlej River route. This stretch is renowned for its thrilling cliffside mountain roads, deep river gorges, and massive hydroelectric projects. Navigate the famous rock-carved Taranda Dhank before entering the lush Baspa Valley. Here, the landscape softens into vibrant apple orchards and riverside villages framed by snow-covered peaks. In the afternoon, visit the historic Kamru Fort area, an excellent introduction to traditional Kinnauri wooden architecture and the serene, ancient village atmosphere.

Day 3 The Last Village of India and Ascent to Kalpa

Drive alongside the crystal-clear Baspa River toward Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border. Spend the morning exploring traditional wooden Himalayan houses, relaxing at quaint mountain cafés, and taking in the panoramic views of the open valley and riverside landscapes. Later, continue your journey through scenic mountain highways toward Kalpa. Upon arrival in this historic settlement, check in and enjoy unparalleled, unobstructed views of the sacred Kinner Kailash mountain ranges, surrounded by fragrant apple orchards and peaceful Buddhist monastery settings.

Day 4 Entering the Cold Desert: Kalpa to Tabo

Today, proceed deeper into the trans-Himalayan region as the lush green valleys of Kinnaur dramatically transform into the rugged, barren mountain terrain of the Spiti cold desert. En route, stop at the picturesque Nako village to visit the serene Nako Lake, perfectly reflecting the surrounding high-altitude peaks. Continue navigating the striking Spiti Valley highways until you reach Tabo. In the evening, explore the ancient Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its millennium-old Himalayan Buddhist heritage, intricate frescoes, and traditional mud-brick architecture.

Day 5 The Cliffside Citadel and Journey to Kaza

Following breakfast, embark on a visually stunning drive toward Kaza through the dramatic, wind-sculpted landscapes of the Spiti Valley. A major highlight today is the visit to Dhankar Monastery, spectacularly perched on a cliff edge overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. After absorbing the spiritual and geological majesty of Dhankar, continue the drive to Kaza, the bustling administrative and cultural capital of the Spiti region. Check into your hotel and relax amidst the striking high-altitude desert landscapes.

Day 6 The High-Altitude Wonders of Spiti Valley

Dedicate the day to exploring the iconic high-altitude villages and monasteries surrounding Kaza. Begin with the world-famous Key Monastery, a fortress-like structure situated on a hilltop that offers sweeping views of the Spiti River valley. Continue to Kibber village and cross the Chicham Bridge, one of the highest bridges in Asia suspended above a breathtaking mountain gorge. The journey then takes you to Hikkim to visit the world’s highest post office. Conclude the circuit with visits to Komic, the highest motorable village, and Langza, famous for its giant Buddha statue, ancient marine fossils, and panoramic Himalayan vistas.

Day 7 The Blue Jewel of the Himalayas: Kaza to Chandratal Lake

Depart Kaza and drive toward the legendary Kunzum Pass, navigating through rugged mountain terrain, glacier-fed streams, and vast, barren valleys. Stop to pay your respects at the Kunzum Mata Temple before descending toward Chandratal Lake. Known as the "Lake of the Moon," this crescent-shaped body of water is renowned for its striking blue hues, perfectly contrasted against the dramatic, stark mountain scenery. Enjoy the profound silence of the lake surroundings and settle in for an unforgettable overnight stay in the pristine Chandratal region.

Day 8 The Rugged Descent: Chandratal to Manali

Begin an adventurous and highly scenic descent toward the Kullu Valley. This thrilling drive traverses rugged mountain roads, shallow river crossings, and rocky glacial valleys. Pass through the remote outposts of Batal and Chhatru, witnessing the raw, untamed beauty of the high Himalayas. Depending on weather conditions and accessibility, enter the lush, green landscapes of Manali via the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel or the historic Rohtang Pass. Arrive in Manali by evening, enjoying the sudden and beautiful contrast of dense cedar forests and civilization.

Day 9 Manali Cultural Exploration & Buffer Day

Spend a relaxed day exploring the cultural and natural attractions of Manali. Visit the 16th-century Hadimba Devi Temple, a masterpiece of wooden architecture surrounded by towering Deodar forests. Later, wander through the vibrant lanes of Old Manali, famous for its bohemian mountain cafés, riverside pathways, and bustling local markets. Strategically, this day also serves as a practical buffer day, ensuring that any unforeseen weather delays or road restrictions during the rugged Spiti circuit do not disrupt your onward travel plans or cause unnecessary stress.

Day 10 Final Departure from the Himalayas

After a leisurely breakfast in the mountains, check out from your hotel. Begin the scenic drive back down through the Himalayan highways, following the path of the Beas River toward the plains. You will be transferred to Chandigarh International Airport or Chandigarh Junction Railway Station for your onward departure, bringing an end to a flawlessly executed and deeply memorable Spiti Valley holiday package.

Destination Intelligence

The Spiti Expedition Compass

Everything you need to know to plan your journey perfectly, from altitude acclimatization to local operational rules.

Seasonal Rhythms

Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert. Here is what to expect:

  • Summer (Jun-Sep): The only time the full circuit (including Chandratal) is open. Pleasant days, cold nights.
  • Winter (Oct-May): Kunzum Pass and Rohtang close. Spiti becomes an isolated, frozen wonderland accessible only via Shimla.

Altitude & Acclimatization

This itinerary involves extreme altitude gains:

  • Kaza & Chandratal: You will sleep at altitudes exceeding 12,500 to 14,000 feet.
  • Acclimatization: Our itinerary ascends gradually via Shimla/Kinnaur to prevent AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
  • Precaution: Stay heavily hydrated and avoid over-exertion during the first few days.

Permits & Borders

Because Spiti borders Tibet, specific regulations apply:

  • Foreign Nationals: Require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to travel through the Kinnaur-Spiti border route.
  • Indian Nationals: Do not require an ILP, but must carry a valid physical Govt ID at all times.
  • Photography: Drone usage is strictly restricted near border zones and monasteries.

Terrain & Roads

Spiti is famous for its adventurous and rugged geography:

  • The Terrain: Expect unpaved, rocky, and dusty roads. The journey is an expedition, not a luxury drive.
  • Batal to Gramphu: This legendary stretch involves driving through glacier-fed water crossings.
  • Buffer Days: Minor delays due to weather or water-level changes in streams are common.

Network & Comms

Connectivity drops significantly as you enter the cold desert:

  • General Coverage: Jio and Airtel work decently in Kaza and Tabo.
  • BSNL Backup: BSNL remains the most reliable network across the valley.
  • Chandratal: There is absolutely zero mobile network or electricity near the lake camps.

Culinary Expectations

Food options adapt to the harsh, high-altitude environment:

  • Tibetan Influence: Expect excellent momos, thukpa, and butter tea in the local villages.
  • Dhaba Culture: On the road (like at Chacha-Chachi Dhaba in Batal), meals are simple dal-chawal and Maggi.
  • Limited Fresh Greens: Due to the barren landscape, fresh vegetables are scarce in upper Spiti.
