Trip Overview
Welcome to the historical heartland of India. This 7-day circuit in Northern Madhya Pradesh explores the pinnacle of medieval Indian architecture. You will wander through the invincible Gwalior Fort, discover the breathtaking, offbeat ruins of Bateshwar and Mitawali, experience the frozen-in-time riverside palaces of Orchha, and marvel at the world-renowned, intricately carved UNESCO temples of Khajuraho.
Day 1 Arrival in Gwalior & The Invincible Fort
Arrive at Gwalior Airport or Railway Station. Your luxury chauffeur will transfer you to your heritage hotel. After lunch, explore the colossal Gwalior Fort, described by Mughal Emperor Babur as "the pearl amongst fortresses in India." Visit the intricately tiled Man Singh Palace, the towering Sas-Bahu Temples, and the Teli Ka Mandir. Conclude the day with the spectacular Sound and Light show at the fort.
Day 2 The Offbeat Triangle: Bateshwar, Padavali & Mitawali
Today features an incredible, off-the-beaten-path excursion (approx. 40 km from Gwalior). Step back in time at Bateshwar, a cluster of 200 meticulously restored mini-Shiva temples hidden in a forested valley. Next, visit the Padavali fortress with its exquisitely carved ceilings. Finally, ascend to the Chausath Yogini Temple at Mitawali—a circular, pillared temple that famously inspired the design of the old Indian Parliament building. Drive to Orchha in the late afternoon (approx. 3 hours).
Day 3 The Riverside Time Capsule (Orchha)
Wake up in Orchha, a town that feels completely frozen in the 16th century. Explore the massive Orchha Fort complex, featuring the Jahangir Mahal with its stunning balconies and the Raj Mahal with brilliant murals. Visit the towering Chaturbhuj Temple and the Ram Raja Temple, the only place where Lord Rama is worshipped as a King. In the evening, watch the sunset behind the hauntingly beautiful Royal Chhatris (cenotaphs) along the banks of the Betwa River.
Day 4 Orchha to Khajuraho via Datia
After breakfast, depart for Khajuraho (approx. 4 hours). En route, make an offbeat stop at Datia to witness the spectacular, seven-story Bir Singh Palace—a magnificent structure built entirely of stone and brick without the use of wood or iron, seamlessly blending Rajput and Mughal architecture. Arrive in Khajuraho by late afternoon, check into your premium resort, and relax.
Day 5 The UNESCO Masterpieces of Khajuraho
Spend a full day exploring the magnificent Khajuraho Group of Monuments. Begin with the Western Group, featuring the colossal Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, adorned with over 800 incredibly detailed sculptures depicting mythology, daily life, and the famous Kamasutra aesthetics. After lunch, visit the quieter Eastern Group, known for its exquisite Jain temples like the Parsvanatha Temple. In the evening, enjoy the highly informative sound and light show.
Day 6 The Grand Canyon of India (Raneh Falls)
Take an exciting half-day offbeat trip to Raneh Falls (approx. 20 km from Khajuraho). This spectacular natural wonder is a deep, 5-kilometer-long canyon carved by the Ken River through vividly colored, crystalline granite and dolomite rocks—often dubbed the Grand Canyon of India. Adjacent to it is the Ken Gharial Sanctuary, where you can spot these unique, long-snouted crocodiles basking on the riverbanks. Return to Khajuraho for a farewell Bundelkhandi dinner.
Day 7 Departure from Khajuraho
Enjoy a final, relaxed breakfast. Depending on your flight or train schedule, you may do some local shopping for brassware or tribal artifacts. Your chauffeur will provide a seamless transfer to the Khajuraho Airport or Railway Station (or Jhansi Railway Station if required) for your journey home.
