Designed with gradual acclimatization, balanced driving distances, and seamless travel flow, this itinerary ensures a comfortable, safe, and exhilarating adventure tour in Ladakh and Lahaul-Spiti.
Day 1 Arrival in Chandigarh & Ascent to Manali
Begin your epic Leh Ladakh holiday package by arriving at Chandigarh International Airport or Chandigarh Junction Railway Station, where you will be greeted by our representative. This marks the start of your journey covering Chandigarh, Manali, Jispa, Sarchu, Leh, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Tso. Embark on a highly scenic drive toward Manali, transitioning from the plains to the winding Himalayan highways. The route follows the Beas River, framed by lush pine forests and riverside valleys. Upon arrival in Manali, check into your hotel and spend a relaxed evening exploring the bohemian charm of Old Manali. Wander through cedar forest paths, browse local markets, and unwind at riverside cafés as you prepare for the high-altitude expedition ahead.
Day 2 The Lahaul Gateway: Manali to Jispa
Start your trans-Himalayan road trip by driving through the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel or the historic Rohtang Pass, depending on weather and accessibility. As you emerge on the other side, the green landscapes of the Kullu Valley dramatically shift to the rugged, stark terrain of the Lahaul Valley. Drive alongside the turbulent Chandra River, passing through remote mountain villages, cascading waterfalls, and high-altitude rocky landscapes. Arrive in the peaceful settlement of Jispa, perfectly situated along the riverbanks and surrounded by towering barren peaks, offering an ideal environment for your first stage of altitude acclimatization.
Day 3 Glacial Lakes and High Passes: Jispa to Sarchu
Proceed deeper into the Himalayan wilderness, crossing some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes on the Manali-Leh highway. The route takes you past the stunning emerald waters of Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal lakes before ascending the mighty Baralacha La Pass at over 16,000 feet. Surrounded by massive glaciers and snow-covered peaks, the descent brings you into the vast, open plains and rugged valleys of Sarchu. Straddling the border between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, Sarchu offers a unique overnight experience amidst the raw, untouched beauty of the high-altitude desert.
Day 4 The Roof of the World: Sarchu to Leh
Today features one of the most thrilling drives of your Ladakh travel itinerary. Depart Sarchu and navigate the famous 21 hairpin bends of the Gata Loops, followed by the high-altitude ascents of Nakee La and Lachulung La. Emerge onto the breathtaking Morey Plains, a vast plateau of dramatic desert landscapes flanked by majestic mountains. Cross the formidable Tanglang La Pass—one of the highest motorable roads in the world—before making your final descent into the historic Indus Valley. Arrive in Leh, a vibrant high-altitude city surrounded by ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, and panoramic mountain scenery.
Day 5 Leh Local Sightseeing & Acclimatization
Dedicate this day to gradually acclimatizing to the 11,500-foot altitude of Leh while exploring its rich cultural heritage. Begin with a visit to the gleaming white Shanti Stupa, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the entire Leh Valley and the Stok Kangri range. Continue to the historic, nine-story Leh Palace, a magnificent example of medieval Tibetan architecture. In the afternoon, explore the bustling local markets, where you can browse for traditional Tibetan handicrafts, pashminas, and authentic silver jewelry, or simply relax in one of the old town’s charming mountain cafés.
Day 6 The Cultural Trail: Sham Valley Excursion
Embark on a scenic excursion through the Sham Valley, following the course of the mighty Indus River. This route is home to some of the best places to visit in Leh. Experience the gravity-defying phenomenon at Magnetic Hill and pay your respects at the revered Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, constructed and maintained by the Indian Army. Witness the spectacular Sangam, the confluence where the emerald waters of the Zanskar River meet the muddy Indus. Conclude the day's sightseeing at the 11th-century Alchi Monastery, globally renowned for its ancient, well-preserved Buddhist frescoes and intricate wood carvings, before returning to Leh.
Day 7 Crossing Khardung La: Leh to Nubra Valley
Prepare for a monumental day as you drive across the legendary Khardung La Pass, offering sweeping views of the Karakoram range and massive glaciers. Descend into the breathtaking Nubra Valley, a high-altitude cold desert nourished by the Shyok and Nubra rivers. Visit the towering Diskit Monastery, featuring a spectacular 106-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha facing down the valley. Later, arrive at the famous Hunder Sand Dunes. Here, you can experience the stark contrast of a desert surrounded by snow-capped mountains and enjoy a unique ride on the double-humped Bactrian camels native to this ancient Silk Route region.
Day 8 The Shyok River Route: Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso
Depart Nubra Valley and take the thrilling, less-traveled route alongside the Shyok River directly toward Pangong Tso. This adventurous drive features rugged terrain, remote mountain valleys, and exciting shallow river crossings. Arrive at the iconic Pangong Tso Lake, a massive endorheic basin situated at 14,270 feet on the Indo-China border. Famous for its crystal-clear waters that dramatically change color from deep blue to turquoise throughout the day, the lake is framed by stark, barren mountains, creating one of the most photogenic landscapes in the world.
Day 9 Sunrise at the Lake and Return to Leh
Wake up early to witness a spectacular, pristine sunrise over the changing colors of Pangong Lake. After breakfast, begin the scenic return journey toward Leh. The route requires crossing the formidable Chang La Pass, the third-highest motorable pass on this circuit. As you descend back toward the Indus Valley, stop to visit the magnificent Thiksey Monastery. Perched on a hill and closely resembling the Potala Palace in Tibet, Thiksey is a stunning architectural marvel housing a two-story-tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha. Arrive back in Leh for your final evening in the Ladakhi capital.
Day 10 Retracing the High-Altitude Highway: Leh to Sarchu / Jispa
Bid farewell to Leh and begin your return Himalayan expedition. This drive allows you to experience the dramatic landscapes of the Leh-Manali highway from a completely different perspective. Recross the soaring heights of Tanglang La, cruise across the vast Morey Plains, and navigate through Lachulung La, Nakee La, and the Gata Loops. Depending on road conditions, weather advisories, and the pace of the day, you will arrive for an overnight stay in either the high-altitude plains of Sarchu or the riverside tranquility of Jispa.
Day 11 Final Descent to the Plains: Return to Chandigarh
Following breakfast in the mountains, embark on the final leg of your journey. The scenic drive takes you through the rugged Lahaul Valley, crossing back through the Atal Tunnel into the lush, green embrace of the Kullu Valley. Continue following the riverside Himalayan highways down through the foothills until you reach the plains. You will be dropped off at Chandigarh International Airport or Chandigarh Junction Railway Station for your onward journey, bringing your majestic trans-Himalayan road trip to a triumphant and memorable close.
